Fire Prevention by Shires Fire and Safety
“Prevention is better than cure”

We have all heard that phrase, but never has it been more applicable to the terrifying aspect of fire in your business.
Shires provide a wide range of advice and services around preventing fires that can not only affect your business continuity but also can endanger your staff and open you to many legal perils if not considered carefully and acted upon.
The UK has an envious reputation in safeguarding its workforce, since the industrial revolution business owners have realised that ensuring their staffs’ safety is not just good business but also is a the duty of every employer. Even with a raft of legislation we come across many instances of businesses flouting even the most basic rules set out by the Health and Safety Executive, rules that have been revised many times over recent years. Like most businesses Shires does not enjoy red tape, however some rules are there with good reason. To save lives and property.
At the end of the day a few simple tips will help you to secure your premises, stock and staff from the ravages of fire, and the aftermath of fire related destruction.
- Think about combustible materials and their storage – Is it safe?
- Ensure you have your heating (and cooling) systems checked for electrical safety at least once a year.
- Ensure you have your PAT testing done annually. Many fires are caused by faulty wiring connecting appliances.
- Train your staff on the use of even the simplest of appliance, the use of the radiant heater for example, the use of the toaster, the safety aspects of the photocopier etc etc.
